On The Table

The Weekly Announcement of Common Table Church

November 21 thru 27

Shake off that turkey coma, we've got church on Sunday!

Though many Commoners are scattered to the four corners of the earth, the faithful remnant that yet remains will gather nigh at Jammin' Java this Sunday at 10am to celebrate the advent of Advent as we consider the theme of 'Hope'.  Our creative team will have good things to spark your fire, artistic expressions of Advent waiting, tales of current hope, and stuff for your hands to do while you consider it all.

Hope to see you then!
Mike Stavlund

PS.  Oh, and don't forget our annual Christmas party/gingerbread extravaganza/chili cook-off on Saturday, December 10, from 4-8pm at the Fairfax Railroad Museum.

November 14 thru 20

As the fortunate person who was able to deliver all of the cleaning supplies, toiletries, and baby gear that we collected last week to FACETs, let me convey the great 'thanks!' that I received.  October and early November are historically times when donations are sparse, and I was assured that all of the supplies we donated would be in people's hands within a day or two.  So, many thanks to you for your generosity and kindness.

And this Friday morning and Saturday, we'll be delivering Thanksgiving baskets for another aid organization in Northern Virginia.   Please contact us if you'd like to help out.

This Sunday, we'll be back at Jammin' Java for a new feature, brought to us by Matt A. and Ken (aka, the Great White Deer Hunters).  Here's their description of what's to come:

This week is our first in a series of discussion based services.  We will start with a prompt but most of the content will be created dynamically as we think out loud together.  Our discussion will use the 2nd chapter of Daniel as our launching point as we think about the imagery of weakness and division as reflected in King Nebuchadnezzar's dream of an image with feet both of clay and iron.  The service will be primarily conversational so there will be lots of opportunity to share as we try to give flesh to this concept and reflect on how it might intersect with our lives.

We hope you'll join us at 10am this Sunday at Jammin' Java to lend your voice.

And next week-- a fourth Sunday when we would normally be elsewhere-- we WILL be at 'Java.  We took the first week of the month off to make room for a Sunday morning concert, so we'll be meeting again on the 27th for our first Advent service.  Our Creative Team will be looking at the traditional Advent theme of 'Hope' through experiences of poetry, art, Scripture, and other expressions.  If you've got some hope to bring, please be in touch-- we'd love to feature it.

Oh, and one more thing:  our annual Christmas party, chili contest, children's candy consumption, and gingerbread house contest will be held at the Fairfax Railroad Museum on Saturday, December 10th from 4-8pm.  Mark your holiday calendars, and don't miss it (srsly, if you haven't been for awhile or aren't sure what you think of CT anymore, this is a great low-pressure chance to stop by and catch up.  ;-)

November 6-13, 2011

Well, after a three week hiatus from our regular Jammin' Java services, we return to our regularly scheduled time and place with a very special treat for you! You are welcome to come to our All-Ages service this Sunday at 10:00 AM at Jammin' Java which will focus on the Beatitudes and God's Dream for His Children.

Our younger CTers have been talking about and exploring ways that we can be God's hands and feet in our world, and bring the beautiful light of God's love to a world in need. Please join us as we all come together to worship. Babysitting will still be available for our very youngest members. Parents of our "big kids", could you have your wonderful kids there a few minutes before 10:00 a.m. so we can run through the song and talk through the service a little? Thanks so much!

Here is a description of how you can be prepared to participate in our worship service this Sunday:
This Sunday is an all-ages service. As you may know, we've been working with the kids on the Beatitudes and we've been talking about how God calls us to be His hands and feet in the world. One of the things we'll be doing at the service is collecting donations to help some of God's people. The items we collect will go to FACETS, a group we've worked with in the past. Their emergency food pantry is nearly empty so they're looking for lots of help. I spoke with the donation coordinator and she said they are expecting to get lots of food from various Thanksgiving drives - so she suggested that we collect some of the other things they really need - such as household cleaning supplies, hygiene items, and baby supplies. The complete list of needs  can be found here. Of course, they won't turn down food, but right now that's not their greatest need.
See you then...
Liz

It has also come to our attention that there are needs for long underwear and for members of New Hope Church, our sister church where many members are homeless. Currently, there is a need for XL and XXL mens jackets and long winter underwear.

If you are able to bring any of these items on Sunday, please do so! If you have items for donation at a later time, we can help you to get the donations to the proper place, just let us know.

Looking ahead, we'll be back at Jammin' Java on Sunday the 20th for a service offered by our Discussion Team, and then again on Sunday the 27th (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) for a Creative Team service - even though that's the fourth Sunday of the month.  (We traded with Java for the first Sunday, when they had a big kids' music show.)

That's all for now.  God bless!

October 31st through November 6th

Hi church!

Wowee - it's November already!  How on God's decreasingly green earth did that happen?

Well, let's kick off November in style - this Friday evening (the 4th), we'll do our monthly Karaoke Night! We'll begin with setup starting at 6pm, then pizza and singing at 6:30, and wrapping up at 8pm. It's at The Lamb Center, the only daytime drop-in center for homeless folks within Fairfax County, off Fairfax Circle and not far from the Vienna Metro. Join us for fun, fellowship, and joy!

Then, despite the fact that this coming Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, we will not be gathering at Jammin' Java on Sunday morning, because they've got some kind of wiz-bang kiddie concert planned instead.  But!  November 1st was All Saints Day, and we will be having a service (on Saturday morning) to celebrate that!  Hear the Words of Weave:
We'll be holding the All Saints Day Service on Saturday 11/5 at 10:00 am at the labyrinth at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna.  If the weather doesn't permit we'll meet at the Rodman House (also at Holy Comforter).
I'm really excited about throwing this together with Liz.  Amy will be singing and Heidi's adding her beautiful artistic touch to make for a great service.
Hope to see you there.
And that's the news for this first week of November.  God bless!

Peace,
Mike Croghan
