Dear Church:
With apologies to the bunch of hard-working folk who braved the heat last week to do some landscaping at the
Benedictine monastery nearby, it looks like we'll be enjoying some cooler temperatures and clear skies this Sunday morning, September 2 at 10am as we gather there to celebrate the anniversary of our church, and to walk a labyrinth together.
Immediately following the time of worship, we'll be having a picnic on the grounds there to extend our Eucharist. The Amazing Kate has graciously volunteered to coordinate the plans, and has asked everyone to bring some meat (or meat-like substance) for the grill, and a dish to share. You also might want to bring a chair or blanket to sit on, both for the picnic and the labyrinth.
So we hope you can join us at this beautiful oasis in the 'burbs of
Bristow, VA . (a note about driving: Google maps produced a rather jacked-up, confusing route for me, but Israel-- the friendly man, not the nation-state-- suggested a more straightforward route: exit 66 at Lee Hwy/29, head south, then take a left onto Linton Hall Road/619. The monastery doesn't have any blatant signage, but you will probably notice the giant Baptist church with huge lettering on your right. The monastery is directly across Linton Hall. Once you get on the grounds, head left at the main building toward the twin white grain silos at the end of the property.)
Next week (September 9th), we'll be gathering at our place in Falls Church for a celebration of baptism! We'll be coming around Lucretia and Alyssa as they celebrate the new life they have been given, and to pledge ourselves to them as they continue to live after Jesus. Please pray that the pool stays relatively warm, and rest assured that there is a (brand-new!) Chipotle just up the hill. So our normal liturgy won't be interrupted that much.
Hope everyone has a nice, relaxing holiday weekend.

Hi church,
We've got a couple of things going on this week, and both of them involve our GNU Team. The GNU Team (formerly known as the New Team) are the members of our community that are especially charged with envisioning and enabling our Giving to Needs Unmet - the things we do to try to bring a little bit of God's kingdom to folks we're connected with in our wider community.
Firstly, the GNU Team, along with the Leadership Team, will be meeting this Thursday evening at the home of
Sam and Dee Doan, starting at 7pm. We'll be talking about future horizons for this team, so if you haven't been involved before and think you might like to be, you're welcome to come be a part of that vision. We'll start by sharing a meal together, so if you're new to the team, please
let the GNU Team know you're coming, so we can be sure to have enough grub.
Secondly, this is the fourth weekend of the month, so instead of a worship service at Jammin' Java, we'll be meeting on Saturday the 25th at 10am at a
Benedictine monastery in
Bristow, VA to help the sisters there with some grounds work. These sisters have maintained an ancient way of life for well over 100 years in Bristow, as suburbia has grown up around their home, and their community has been a blessing to ours in the past. So, come help us try to return a little of that blessing!
That's all for this week, but here are some reminders of upcoming events:
On Labor Day weekend (Sunday, September 2nd), we'll return to the monastery to have our annual anniversary celebration of the church, and to spend some time in prayer and meditation at their permanent
labyrinth.
We're planning a baptism celebration for September 9th. If you'd like be baptized - or if you're considering it - please let us know.
Finally, we're currently working on dates and locations for a fall retreat, sometime in October or November.
Enjoy your week!
Peace,
Mike Croghan

Dear Church--
Late-breaking news: a bunch of us will be getting together with Israel's Sudanese friends Dhieu and David on Saturday afternoon for some hiking at Riverbend Park on the Potomac. You can meet us at Culpeper House (2428 S. Culpeper St Arlington, VA 22206 - note that Google Maps is wrong; 25th street doesn't touch Rt. 7) around noonish, or at Riverbend Park (8700 Potomac Hills St, Great Falls, VA 22066) a bit later. But definitely contact Israel if you want to participate, to guarantee you'll find us. (Or contact the church if you don't have Izzy's number.)
On Sunday, we'll be finishing out our summer film series with a look at a story of a man whose boat is destroyed in an 'act of God'. So, with no other recourse, he decides that he will file a lawsuit to recoup his losses. Our friend John will be helping us to consider questions like 'who should speak for God?'. Join us at
Jammin' Java at 10am for what is sure to be a thought-provoking time.
And looking ahead, we have some plans in development:
Next weekend, we'll be doing a Service-Worship project at a nearby monastery, cleaning up the grounds.
On Labor Day weekend (Sunday, September 2nd), we'll return to the monastery to have our annual anniversary celebration of the church, and to spend some time in prayer and meditation at their permanent
labyrinth.
In early September, we're planning a baptism celebration. If you'd like be baptized-- or if you're considering it-- please let us know.
We're currently working on dates and locations for a fall retreat, sometime in October or November.
Hope to see you soon,
Mike (stavlund)
Hi church,
I hope you're enjoying the dog days of summer. I consulted
my dog, who said it's way too hot, and it's not her fault or that of her species. Well, sorry I brought it up, then.
Anyway...we've got a few things goin' on this week, despite the heat.
On Thursday, August 9th, at 7pm, the Design Team will be meeting at
Mike Croghan and Tina Driskell's house to plan the fall series of worship services. (Who is the Design Team? If you'd like to help plan our fall services, then
you are. You can participate at any level that works for you, so come on by. We'll order some pizza for those who prefer not to eat before they arrive, but we'll try to start working early so we can go home early too.) This fall, we're going to be exploring how Christian communities take on very different forms depending on the cultural context in which they arise. If you have suggestions for communities worldwide on which we might focus, please send them to the
Design Team email list.
Then, speaking of
Mike and Tina's house, everybody's invited to a housewarming party at our new place starting at 6pm on Saturday the 11th. Please don't bring gifts - we don't need more stuff, and we feel pretty strongly that it's friends and neighbors that warm a house. You can bring a side, salad, or dessert, if you want to, but that's entirely optional. We'll be providing grilled meats and veggie-meats, and a variety of beverages and finger foods. Also, Paolo's rockin' karaoke mic will be there to make stars of us all. Hope to see you there!
Alas, our HOA's draconian parking policies will compel us to send you home by 10pm Saturday night, in plenty of time to get a good night's rest before our worship service at 10am Sunday morning at
Jammin' Java. Continuing our summer film series,
P3T3 will lead us in reflecting on a film segment about a "cargo cult" on a Pacific island in the mid-20th century - and what their religious expressions might have in common with ours.
Have fun beating the heat!
Peace,
Croghan

After two weeks of connecting off-site , this week we return to Jammin' Java and our summer film series. Watching these short films and discussing their implications for our life together has been fun and very rewarding, and so I'm excited to screen "Select Fit" this week and hear your thoughts. With many of us out of town, we might be a smaller group, so bring your 'A' game and consider buying a larger cup of coffee to sharpen your thoughts--
Don't make me call on you in the back there, Mr. Smith!
That's 10am on Sunday at
Jammin' Java. Hope to see you then!
