May 28 to June 3

Friends,

Just a couple of events on the calendar this week - I hope you can join us at one or the other!

Saturday, June 2, 5:00-8:00 PM, Doan home: Beer+, our spiritual friendship connecting place, makes its triumphant return this weekend. This group is designed to be a place where we relax and open ourselves up a bit -- challenging each other to grow as individuals and as a community. This week, we plan to not only catch up on the latest goings on in our lives, but to put several potential small group ideas on the table and see how we might be able to continue to come alongside each other in intentional ways. If you're interested in joining us and would like more information, please feel free to contact any member of the Leadership Team.

Sunday, June 3, 10:00 AM, Jammin' Java: We'll gather for our first worship service of the Pentecost season this Sunday, as we begin a three-week series inspired by Fire. This week we'll allow scripture to inspire us as we consider two examples of God appearing to and communicating with his people through fire. (See Genesis 15 and Acts 2 if you'd like to read-ahead.)

Enjoy the rest of your week,

Deanna

May 21 through 27 - er, 28

Hi church,

The Easter season, with its rebirth of blooms in riotous color, open to God's gifts and full of the seeds of potential, comes to a close this week. This Sunday is Pentecost, and with it, the seeds that sprouted during Easter turn to tongues of fire, as the Spirit forges in us the beginning of a new covenant, lights a beacon of connection with God and neighbor, and blazes outward in uncontrollable wildness, carrying these seeds of the Kingdom.

What better way to begin this season of fire than with a service-worship project, bringing a little spark of the Kingdom to a friend in need? So this coming Monday, May 28th, we'll be helping Jackie's friend Adriana with some home improvement work (mowing, putting up awnings on her windows, putting up a gate at the top of her stairs, power washing her deck, and any other tasks that our time allows). We'll meet at Adriana's home in Herndon (402 Madison Forest Drive, Herndon, VA 20170-3300) at 12 noon. We'll plan to work at her place until around 3 pm, and then proceed to the Bulanow home (1001 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170) for a good ole fashioned cook out. J4CK and P3T3 will provide the meat and buns and would love us to bring our own beer and a side dish to share.

In honor of Pentecost and as a hint of the worship series on the theme of "Fire" which we'll begin the following Sunday, June 3rd, we'll have a blazing firepit at the cookout and we'll roast some marshmallows. But since it's service-worship week, there'll be no worship service at Jammin' Java this Sunday (the 27th).

So may the Spirit be with you in this season of fire, and have a great holiday weekend! Hope to see you on Monday.

Peace,
Croghan

May 14 thru 20

Hello, Church:

Just a couple of items to note this week:

Tina and Mike
have moved up their big move to this Saturday, May 19. They'll be moving from 508 Plum St., Vienna, VA 22180 to 13337 Feldman Pl., Herndon, VA 20170, beginning at 10am. Their current plan seems to be to counteract the presence of boxes of rocks (no kidding!) with grilled steak and margaritas, so it ought to be interesting, to say the least.

As we continue our exploration of the roots of our faith through our observation of the Jewish calendar, we come to a happy overlap with our current blooms series. Shavuot is a festival where the first-fruits of the people's crops are offered up to God. So the Design Team (the fine folks who plan and execute our Sunday gatherings) would like you to bring a symbol of the first-fruits of your life-- maybe a symbol of a friendship, or a rewarding project, or a piece of art, or an exercise program, or a clean house, or a small child. Where is God blessing you? Bring some symbol of that blessing, and we'll celebrate together this Sunday morning at 10am at Jammin' Java.

Finally, since next weekend is Memorial Day, we expect that many of us will be traveling. But for those left behind, our GNU Team (an open-source group devoted to Giving to Needs Unmet) is combing our relational networks to organize a service project for our enjoyment and formation. Stay tuned for more details.

Later,
Mike

May 7 through 13

Blooms: a visual picture of beauty and emergence and hope. Jackie and Mike got this short series off to great start this week with their thoughts about kids, flowers, spiders and the weak and pervasive forces of God. This Sunday, in his Common Table debut, Ken will be leading us as we consider the relationship between flowers and fruit, in the physical world and spiritual one. As usual, we'll meet at Jammin Java at 10:00 AM.

Following the service, and after we grab something to eat, the Design Team will be meeting to brainstorm and plan for our June and July services. We'll gather at the Croghan/Driskell home around 1:00 and plan to wrap up by 3:30. This is our chance to collectively explore our upcoming services -- to inspire and be inspired by one another -- so if you have been thinking about getting more involved in Sunday mornings but didn't know how, definitely plan to join us!

And speaking of the Croghan/Driskells, we have several events on the horizon related to Mike and/or Tina. First, after a several week process of nomination and confirmation by our congregation, we are excited to welcome Mike as the newest member of our Leadership Team. We plan to take a few minutes during the service this week to commission and pray for the team, so plan to join us for that. Second, in anticipation of their upcoming move to Herndon, Mike and Tina are hosting a "Come get our stuff" event this Saturday afternoon. They have lots of books, tools and household items to give away, so plan to swing by on Saturday and see what treasures you can find. Finally, Mike and Tina are looking for help during their actual move on May 26th - mark your calendars now and start looking forward to a steak reward!

Enjoy the rest of your week,

Deanna

April 30 through May 6

Hey, Church--

The Design Team, who do their best to lead us toward an experience of God most Sunday mornings, are having a couple of upcoming meetings.

This Thursday at 7pm, they'll be meeting at Liz's home to work on some short-term planning for May services.

Next Sunday afternoon, May 13, they'll be gathering with a wider group of people to do some long-range, creative brainstorming about ideas for the summer ('fire' in June, and 'short films' to follow). Keep an eye out for more details on this meeting, and please plan to join us-- absolutely everyone is welcome and encouraged to come!

This Sunday, May 6, we'll be gathering at Jammin Java to kick off our 'Blooms' series, as we consider the power and weakness, and the hope and heartbreak, found in simple flowers. Jackie and I have been collaborating on this project, and I'm really excited about it.

Hope to see you soon,
Mike

P.S. By 'most Sunday mornings', I mean to say that we don't meet for worship at Jammin' Java each and every week, not that Design Teamers are selective or in any way lax about their intention or execution of leading us toward an experience of God each and every opportunity they get. ;-)
